Summer is in full swing around here and we’re continuing our summer series with a brand new collection of festive crochet July 4th bunnies! These ones are decked out in their most patriotic outfits and ready for a fun filled Independence Day!
We’re starting off the celebration with an oh-so-cute patriotic bald eagle! That little yellow nose and feather-y ruffles are so perfect! Every barbeque needs some sweet, cool treats and that’s where our watermelon and bomb pop bunny come in! And of course, we have to end the night of July 4th with a bang! Our firecracker bunny is ready to put on a sparkling show for everyone!
The base for the bunny crochet pattern is the same as the one that can be FOUND HERE. This post is only sharing the modifications needed to make each character. You will need to reference back to the original Chubby Bunny Crochet Pattern when crocheting each piece. Under each festive bunny I have listed the specific materials needed to complete each design.
I hope you have fun making these July 4th Bunnies!

- When the number comes BEFORE the stitch, such as 2 sc, this means to place two single crochet stitches into the same stitch.
- If there are two stitches listed in between commas, such as “Sc, hdc dc, sc”, this means to place both a hdc and dc together in one stitch.

Firecracker Bunny
Materials:
- Yarn- I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in the color Scarlet, Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn in the color Light Gray, Michaels Loops & Threads Impeccable in the colors White, Sunny Day, and Soft Rose, Michaels Craft Smart yarn in the color Orange.
- Size E/3.5mm Crochet Hook
- 1 pair of black 9mm safety eyes
- Pet Slicker Brush
- Plus all other materials listed in the original pattern
Ears, Arms, Legs, and Tail- Follow the pattern and make all pieces in Scarlet.
Body
Tip! There are a lot of color changes for this pattern. When making each color change, carry the yarn color not being used behind the work and crochet over it. Then when it’s time to use the new color, simply drop the old color and pick up the new color to complete the stitch.
We will be doing a “regular color change” for all the color changes. Find how to do this color change below.
Follow rounds 1-5 of the original pattern, using scarlet yarn. Change to White yarn after completing round 5. Then continue with what is stated below.
R6: *Sc 3 in white, sc 1 in scarlet, inc in scarlet* 6 times. (36 sts)
R7: *Sc 3 in white, sc 3 in scarlet* 6 times. (36 sts)
R8: *Sc 3 in white, sc 2 in scarlet, inc in scarlet* 6 times. (42 sts)
R9-18: *Sc 3 in white, sc 4 in scarlet* 6 times. (42 sts)
R19: *Sc 3 in white, sc 2 in scarlet, inv dec 1 in scarlet* 6 times. (36 sts)
Fasten off the White yarn and secure. Continue using Scarlet yarn.
Follow rounds 20-24 of the original pattern to complete the body.
Add safety eyes between rounds 11&12, 6 stitches apart. Place the eyes in the red sections.
Assemble the ears, arms, legs, and tail exactly as the pattern states.
Fuse
Using Light Gray yarn,
R1: 5 sc in magic ring. (5 sts)
R2-9: Sc 5.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing. Leave fuse unstuffed.
To make the flame- Take a strand of Sunny Day, Orange, and Scarlet and tie a knot to join the strands. With the yarn needle, weave through to the top of the fuse and come out through the magic ring. Trim the yarn to desired length. With a yarn needle, pick apart each strand of yarn.
Then with a pet slicker brush, brush the yarn. If you haven’t done this before, check out the video tutorial below. Step by step photos are under the video. Use scissors to trim and shape the flame.
To finish, use the yarn needle to sew the fuse to the top of the bunny. You’ll want to place this on top of the magic ring from the body, so it sits between the ears perfectly. I bent mine to look more like a fuse than just a candle. Fluff the brushed yarn to look like fire.
